By the exacting art of X-ray crystallography, Franklin produced images of DNA of unprecedented clarity — among them the famous Photograph 51, whose cross of shadows revealed the molecule's helical form.
From that image Watson and Crick read the structure of the double helix. Franklin died at thirty-seven, before the Nobel that honoured the discovery, her share in it long underacknowledged.
